Shift from Extortion to Destruction in OT Cyberattacks

Matthew Rogers, OT cybersecurity lead at CISA, noted that attackers are increasingly willing to cause impact at scale, such as planting malware on programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to override safety parameters. This shift, coupled with the use of wiper malware to permanently cripple industrial control systems, poses a severe risk to U.S. critical infrastructure, especially given the difficulty of replacing outdated equipment at scale.
